First step towards the hydrogen core network completed!
A few weeks ago, the operators of the gas pipelines submitted their application for the construction of a hydrogen core network to the Federal Network Agency. Approval is expected within the next two months. Construction of the network could begin as early as 2024, with the first pipelines due to go into operation next year.
Barbara Fischer from FNB Gas emphasized that the core network lays the foundation for the hydrogen economy. A central project will be "GetH2" in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, which could put the first parts into operation in 2025. Economics Minister Robert Habeck also called the application an important step for the hydrogen infrastructure.
The core network will have a length of 9,666 kilometers, with around 60 percent of existing natural gas pipelines being converted to hydrogen. The costs amount to around 19.7 billion euros, with a completion date of 2032, which can be extended to 2037 if necessary. The network will also include transfer points for international hydrogen exchange.
The EU Commission has approved the funding, and the Bundestag has determined the funding path to cover the costs.
