CO2 emissions from heating systems will not be billed until 2028.
Emissions trading 2 is coming a year later!
The latest agreement reached by the EU has important consequences for businesses. With a view to the World Climate Conference in Brazil, EU member states have agreed on the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. At the same time, the instruments have been partially relaxed – up to 5 percentage points of this reduction can be achieved through compensation with foreign certificates. As a result, the actual intra-European reduction target may shrink to 85%.
A postponement was also decided: the inclusion of buildings and transport in the so-called Emissions Trading Scheme 2 (EU ETS 2) will not take place until 2028.
For you as a company, this means specifically:
- The EU ETS 2 for the transport and building heating sectors is coming
- The maximum amount of certificates will continue to be gradually reduced.
- Price dynamics will remain unchanged
Now to the point: if your company is simply planning to „buy certificates when the time comes,“ then you are overlooking two things:
1. The system remains geared toward cost pressure—those who do not reduce emissions end up in a cost trap.
2. By renovating your halls to make them more energy efficient, you have one of the most powerful tools at your disposal to avoid the cost trap as far as possible.
The triple solution: modernize your hall heating system – reduce emissions – lower CO₂ costs. This gives you three benefits:
- They reduce energy and CO₂ costs by up to 70%.
- You are making a future-proof investment that complies with GEG standards.
- You can easily finance the investment yourself through the savings – in no time at all.
