GMG abolishes 65 percent requirement - opportunities for hall operators

With the key points for a new Building Modernization Act (GMG), the coalition is implementing its announced plan to correct key weaknesses in the GEG 2024. Many homeowners in Germany have been waiting for this clarification. But what impact will this have on industrial production and logistics halls in the industrial and commercial sector?
Thomas Kübler, expert for efficient and economical hall heating systems, classifies the planned regulations and assesses their significance for hall operators.

CORNERSTONE 2 OPP:
The requirements of the Heating Act (GEG §§ 71-71p) will be deleted. The obligation to operate new heating systems with at least 65 % renewable energy will no longer apply to new and existing buildings.

EXPERT OPINION:
„The elimination of the 65-%-EE hurdle is primarily relevant for new builds, as there is already the option of fulfilling the energy saving requirement for refurbishments. The elimination partially eliminates the systemic calculation errors of DIN 18599 in new builds in the short term. Our standards working group set up for this purpose is already working on further optimizations (although this is progressing slowly). The switch to the four-stage decarbonization model is a great temporary help in terms of design. However, it remains our task to ensure that hall buildings are taken into account independently.“

CONCLUSIONS: The political guideline is now clearly recognizable. Companies that continue to postpone investments must expect rising demand and higher capacity utilization in the industry to lead to additional costs. With increasing market dynamics, scheduling is also becoming more challenging. For hall operators, there is therefore much to be said for a prompt decision, as the GMG cornerstones provide a clear regulatory framework and open up new technological scope.
