Hall heating refurbishment - simple and lucrative. Practical example PFAFF Industrial

November 1, 2018

The old hall heating system consumes too much energy. And it is becoming increasingly unreliable. Good reasons to finally tackle heating modernization and replace the old system with a modern, energy-efficient one. But the expense seems high and is often shied away from. Yet today there are alternative solutions that can also be very interesting from an economic point of view.

Why many companies shy away from renovating hall heating systems - and miss out on a lot of potential savings

"We know that our heating system is old and not efficient enough. But in the short term, we don't have the capacity to set up a new infrastructure project. We are patching up the bare essentials." "We've been annoyed with the old heating system for years. But the hall is rented. People are simply afraid to make long-term investments." Two typical statements when it comes to outdated heating systems in existing buildings. Often, however, the necessary budgets are simply not made available by the management - investments are primarily made in the production process. Hall heating is considered less relevant. In addition, larger investments that are depreciated over years often simply do not fit into financial planning. This is a crux that many plant or maintenance managers struggle with.

The problem with this is that many companies lose millions over the years. In saved energy costs alone. Budgets that could be freed up for other investments. At the same time - if you think about the reductions in CO2 emissions that are urgently required by climate policy - relevant potential savings literally disappear into thin air.

How the mammoth "hall heating refurbishment" project can be solved quickly and easily - and how your company can benefit from it

But there is a solution. It's called renting hall heating. Unusual, because heating systems are traditionally regarded as capital goods. But this view has changed radically since the hall heating specialist KÜBLER expanded its portfolio with the innovative rental model called HeizWerk. This is because the technology leader for energy-efficient hall heating systems provides one of the most sensible answers to the frequent investment backlog in the energy-efficient refurbishment of large-capacity heating systems. It also offers a quick and practical solution when halls are rented or are only to be heated for a limited period of time.

How PFAFF Industrial approached the issue of "hall heating" - and what experiences the global player for industrial textile processing has had with it

PFAFF Industriesysteme und Maschinen GmbH has experience with the new rental solution. How did this come about? Helmut Pfaender, head of safety/standby at PFAFF Industrial and responsible for the Kaiserslautern and Lorsch sites, describes it like this: "We had clear ideas when it came to hall heating. Firstly, we wanted an energy-efficient gas dark radiator system, powered by liquid gas. And secondly, the system had to be rentable." Ultimately, the hall to be heated was an interim solution. It had become necessary in order to create more production capacity in the short term until the new building at the Lorsch site was completed. A period of two to three years, for which a former parking garage for large vehicles had been rented, which was previously unheated.

Why dark radiators, Mr. Pfaender? "We have been heating the warehouses and assembly halls in Kaiserslautern in this way for years. With the corrosion-sensitive materials we work with, we couldn't afford open gas combustion, otherwise we would bring moisture into the hall. We have found that dark radiators work extremely well. In terms of precipitation, but also because of the low background noise. And because they are generally an efficient and cost-effective solution with low follow-up costs."

PFAFF Industrial in Lorsch currently has around 12 months of experience with the rented hall heating system from KÜBLER and is completely satisfied. "The heat load calculation has worked reliably, the systems are new and better developed. For us, the calculation absolutely works," is Helmut Pfaender's summary. Devices from the new PRIMA standard line were used, which are characterized by a first-class price-performance ratio with a 60 % infrared component. The experienced safety and maintenance manager also rates the possibility of moving the KÜBLER systems into the new building without any problems as positive. "As with other projects, a general contractor will be responsible for the budget, but we will clearly contribute our ideas here. In my opinion, there is no better solution for heating halls than dark radiators," says Pfaender.

Why renting hall heating is often a lucrative alternative - and how it actually pays off

The new HeizWerk rental model offers a number of advantages that make it interesting for many hall projects. The 10 most important are

1. no capital expenditure

There is no expense for the hall operator. Neither for planning, nor for implementation, nor financially. This is because there are no investment or financing costs. Just like depreciation.

2. immediately reduce operating costs

In existing buildings, rented hall heating saves money. This is because the rental price is lower than the energy costs saved.

3. use modern high-efficiency technologies in new or existing buildings

With energy savings of between 30 and 70 % compared to conventional solutions, KÜBLER's hall heating systems are among the most efficient technologies available. The savings achieved contribute to an immediate improvement in liquidity. And they increase equity and return on equity.

4. reduce the burden on the environment

Hall heating systems from KÜBLER are an effective lever for the energy revolution. This is because the high energy savings not only have a positive economic effect. The ecological balance sheet also benefits sustainably from the significantly reduced CO2 emissions.

5. make a smart business decision

The cost savings are usually higher than the rent. This means that the rental model pays for itself from day one. (Source: KÜBLER GmbH Energiesparende Hallenheizungen)

6. building on security of supply

KÜBLER has a nationwide presence in Germany for a secure and reliable heat supply. This also applies to the new rental model made in Germany. And over the entire term. Maximum system availability is guaranteed, from predictive maintenance to the rectification of any faults or repairs. The terms can be customized. Together with the fixed agreed cost framework, this ensures entrepreneurial flexibility with a high level of budget and planning security.

7. increase thermal comfort

KÜBLER offers tried and tested solutions. These infrared heaters are characterized by their uniform room temperature. The heating principle is similar to that of the sun, which is considered to be particularly pleasant. This creates a feel-good climate in the halls - completely without dust turbulence or draughts.

8. fulfill legal framework conditions

The highly efficient heating technology is supported by an intelligent operating management and monitoring system. It ensures continuous optimization of the heating process. This allows energy savings to be actively controlled and potential to be used sustainably. Logs and reports can be generated at any time at the touch of a button. Ultimately, it is the company's efficiency targets that are supported by the heating modernization. For example, in accordance with EnEV and EEWärmeG, or for certification in accordance with DIN 16247 or ISO 50001.

9. multiple award-winning solutions from the specialist

KÜBLER stands for around 30 years of experience in the development, design and operation of sustainable, energy-efficient systems. The company specializes in the development of highly efficient infrared hall heating systems and is regarded as an innovation and technology leader in this segment. It has been setting the technical standards for the industry for decades. Most recently with the WÄRME 4.0 digital hall heating concept. KÜBLER is regularly recognized for its corporate and innovative achievements. Awards in recent years include: German Sustainability Award 2012 for "Germany's most sustainable product" (H.Y.B.R.I.D.), Energy Masters Award 2014 (Reiners + Fürst customer project with around 65 % energy savings), Energy Efficiency Award 2016 (Thelen Group customer project with around 60 % energy savings), Rhineland-Palatinate Innovation Award 2018 (WÄRME 4.0 - the Digital Hall Heating System).

10. rent hall heating:

An all-round carefree packageThe hall heating rental service model is a complete all-round carefree package. Excluding operation and energy supply (procurement remains with the user as usual), the package includes all services from the analysis of hall-specific energy flows, planning and engineering to reliable heating operation and bundles these into a single product: heat. All these services are combined in HeizWerk:

  • Modern energy-saving heating technology
  • Planning, engineering, realization
  • Advice on purchasing gas
  • System operation
  • Service and maintenance
  • Availability guarantee
  • Digital control and analysis software (heat management system)
  • Preparation of annual heat reports (e.g. for ISO 50001 or DIN EN 16247)

An economical and sustainable solution for hall operators who rely on guaranteed energy efficiency and cost reduction for heating.
